I absolutely love to second shoot at weddings and here’s why…
I get to have a built in buddy the whole day. It’s always nice to have someone to talk to and bounce ideas off of when you’re documenting such an important day.
I love seeing other photographer’s in action, especially those that I look up to and admire.
It’s way less pressure than being the lead. I get a chance to breathe and get some fun creative pictures that the lead may have missed while documenting the big stuff.
Candids!!! I love taking candids of the wedding party/family while the lead is shooting the formals.
Angles and close ups. The last thing the lead wants is for me to duplicate the same picture they’re taking. So, I switch it up! I try different angles and stand in a different spot. (Usually about 90 degrees to the lead, so that way I’m not in their shot!) I’ll switch out my lens and get some closer up detailed shots if the lead is shooting wide and vice versa. This allows me to challenge myself and really think outside the box.
I like getting to work with the groom while the lead works with the bride (or really whatever the lead needs me to do) It allows me to keep my skills sharp and to be ready for anything at a moment’s notice. Weddings are no joke!!
Lastly, I like to make the lead look good and I work my booty off doing it. It’s all about teamwork and at the end of day, we’re all in this together.
Thank you to the amazingly talented Annie at Ann Morris Photography who has trusted me to second with her numerous times. These images are from being her second shooter.
